Staying Motivated : Assigning an objective, seeing the value in my work
After our CG meeting on 01/06/13... I learned a few ways my other members stay motivated. My favorite method was assigning an objective and seeing the value in what I'm doing.
For example, I'm going to start waking up early and read for an hour in the morning.
01/11/13 Update: During the week I tried to assign an objective when I wanted to complete a task. To name an instance, I was at work and became disinterested in the task I had to complete. After I became aware of my lack of motivation, I applied my new found method of staying motivated, I assigned an objective. I told myself, "Once this task is complete think about the value it will add to my life." The following are the thoughts that entered my mind:
- Staying motivated and completing this will allow me to do finish my other tasks, or allow me to help my co-workers.
- Completing this will be an accomplishment and make me feel good about the job i've done.
- Just do it.
After loosely assigning an objective, I almost instantly saw the value in my work. Seeing the VALUE helped me stay MOTIVATED and ultimately led to the completion of the tedious task.
Overall, this was a great exercise and I will continue to apply other methods until I find the one that is most effective.

Reaching Out: Improving from within, while helping others
Exercise: Daily Deed
Objective: To set a goal providing one good deed to a fellow being. It can be anything, as long as it benefits another person.
Purpose: To create a goal (a daily deed), meet the goal, and be a good person.

Monday, Novermber 12th, 2012While driving home from work I reached a stop sign and sitting there was a broken down vehicle in the middle of the road. The driver gave me a "go ahead" motion and I followed the order. As I drove by it was clear the driver was mortified and was having car issues. I continued on my way and pulled into the intersection and thought to myself, "how can I let her sit there?" I pulled a u-turn, parked in the 7-Eleven, and walked 100 feet to her car and asked if she needed help. She was reluctant, but I insisted and had her put her car in neutral and I pushed her out of traffic. While pushing, a passing runner stopped and helped, it was refreshing to see a good person offer a helping hand. The experience also made me realize, many people are too selfish, or unaware of others in need. From the time I drove by the driver in need, to making my u-turn and parking in the 7-Eleven I counted 8+ vehicles drive past the broken down vehicle.

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012A good friend asked for me to proof-read a cover letter for a position out of the country. I'm not much of a proof reader, but decided i'd try my best to help him. After reviewing his work and adding a few comments, I felt I had offered some good feedback and sent it back. Once he saw my comments he was happy that I took the time to offer some thoughtful, constructive feedback. It felt great to help a friend while at the same time improving my proof reading skills.

Friday, November 30th, 2012A grocery store outing can always be a great experience. While shopping I turned into an aisle and this lady in her 70's and I made eye contact. This lady was very sweet looking and was with what looked like her daughter. She held a bunch of bananas in each hand, the right had the larger bunch. I gave her a warm smile and as she smiled back she asked in a very sweet voice, "would you care for some bananas?" . I politely accepted (one can never have too many bananas). As she handed the bunch from her left hand I immediately said, "but I want the ones in your right hand!" The three of us had a nice laugh and I took my bananas and placed them in my cart. As I was walking away she said, "you're so handsome, I'm surprised all the girls aren't following you in the store." I blushed a little and said, "thank you" and went to finish my shopping with a giant grin on my face.

5th Year of CollegeIt was a cold day in January and Marquette had just got pounded with snow.
While walking to my afternoon class I noticed many of the driveways were plowed and/or shoveled, except for one driveway which was still covered in a foot of snow. The driveway belonged to a sweet older lady whose name was Paige. I could tell she was struggling and this job required more energy than she probably possessed. I had an internal debate whether I should offer my assistance. "I'll be late for class, Maybe she'll be offended if I offer help, That really is a lot of snow do I want to spend the next 2 hours shoveling?!" It was a point in my life where I literally said "Eff it, I'm going to help." I approached her and timidly asked if she needed help and she politely declined, but I could sense a feeling of gratitude/interest/relief. I replied, "Well I have a class that will last two hours, if I come back and it's not shoveled i'll gladly help." She thanked me and I continued to class. After class I walked back to check on her progress much to my excitement, she didn't make any. In fact she was inside having a cup of coffee. I had to knock on her door and was greeted by an aging golden retriever ( one of my favorite pets ). Paige was happy to see me and showed me where to the shovels and I was off! Finally after two hours of labor I had the driveway cleared. My jacket was off despite it being in the low 20s and I could see the steam rising off my body. Paige thanked me again and again and offered to pay me $10.. i tried my best to refuse, but then she reminded me how many beers $10 can buy and at that point I had to accept. I had just one task to complete, put away the shovel... and as I walked into her garage and placed the shovel down I couldn't help but notice... the orange snow blower sitting in the corner. |
