Presenting Our Core Group

We accepted an opportunity to present our Core Group on 12/18.  The theme was  Personal Growth and Success - with emphasis on the core group.
I invite the members of the CG to start thinking about how we can advise high school students under this theme of personal growth and success. Remember how we were in high school? What if we had the chance to go back in time and advise ourselves.  We gave a great chance to showcase what we do here, while contributing to the thoughts of 300 students in the process of making their own career choices.  What can we offer these young minds?

Edutainment Presentation

Daily Deeds

Our first goal was one in itself, to be mentally goal-oriented.  Our Core Group has determined that it is quite easy to slack off on a goal that we have set.  We have seen the direct need to apply training wheels to the way we think each day of the week and have incorporated a practical way to start obtaining goals. DailyDeeds are our way to start today, by making a difference in the lives of those around us.

Jose

Today's DailyDeed simply fell into my lap on Sunday evening and I am pleased to note that it came about the very day of our decision to incorporate this method for simple mind training.  One of my colleagues recommended me one of his friends from Puerto Rico, because he is having trouble with English.  He had a paper that was due and he asked if I could proof read it for him and help him with his grammar and thesis development.  This DD only took around 30 minutes and was simply a pleasure, as I was wondering how I would begin attaining this goal set by our Core Group.

Gin

I was at Mcdonalds ordering
a coffee before class and I met Gin.  She is a middle aged woman who was working the drivethru.  She initiated a conversation with me (I perceived anyways) by commenting on how poor my debit card worked.  She said, "Brad your card is being such a pain in my behind right now."  Seeing that she knew my name from my card, I only felt it fair that I  asked her name.  She seemed a bit surprised but proceeded to tell me about how things were going for her.  Everyone enjoys when someone takes interest in their life because it feels good to know someone cares.

Relationship Listening
Listening skills are quite hard to come by sometimes.  Today through this DD I was able to discover a way to make my listening more effective.  I feel all to often (incorrectly) that offering advice after listening is appropriate but most times it is not.  It is a great service to lend your ear to a person who just wants to put their thoughts out there... especially concerning tough emotional things in their life.  Such things that advice from a person so inexperienced as myself, would not have any significance whatsoever.  Asking questions and relaying the information they've just delivered seems to be a much more effective way of assisting someone. Enabling them to see their own perspective in a different light through third-person questioning.

Family

At times it is easy to neglect doing the little things for family.  My grambito is coming to visit for thanksgiving so I called her today to make sure she knew how eager I am to see her! Taking family for granted is a simple and subtle weakness

Hearty Praise

I admired something in a person and had the perfect chance to give a genuine compliment.  I do not commend others enough and I intend to do so more often.
